Nordic Forestry Automation

AI perception for harvesters that supports operators during thinning, built on sensor fusion and computer vision.

Harvesting & machineryLund, SwedenFounded 2022

Nordic Forestry Automation develops AI-powered perception systems for forest harvesting machinery, combining sensor fusion with computer vision to support operators during thinning operations. The founding team holds PhDs from the Wallenberg AI Autonomous Systems and Software (WASP) programme. Södra has signed a letter of intent to deploy the system across its harvesting fleet.

NFA closes SEK 48 million to move from reading the stand to steering the machine

Lund-based Nordic Forestry Automation has closed a SEK 48 million round led by Navigare Ventures and Almi Invest Greentech, with LRF Ventures as a new owner. Its thinning operator-support already runs on around a dozen harvester models across seven markets. The round funds the next step: semi-automation, where the machine takes on part of the work while a driver supervises.

Weyerhaeuser Pilots Kodama Remote Skidders and NFA Harvester AI on 11M-Acre Estate

Weyerhaeuser, the largest private landowner in the US, is piloting a Kodama Systems autonomous skidder operated 400 miles away from the cut, and has adopted Lund-based Nordic Forestry Automation's in-cabin AI co-pilot for harvesters — running on a thinning algorithm Weyerhaeuser built itself. The work is part of a wider AI program building a per-tree digital twin of 11 million acres from satellite, drone and LiDAR data, with drone-trained models now replacing foot-counted seedling surveys across South and Pacific Northwest plantations. CEO Devin Stockfish has tied the program to a $1B annual profit lift target by 2030, independent of any rise in lumber prices. SVP Timberlands Travis Keatley calls the remote-skidder pilot "a path to full autonomy."

Södra Scales Up Nordic Forestry Automation

Moving from pilot tests to full deployment, the NFA system uses autonomous vehicle sensors to map trees in real-time, acting as a high-tech "co-pilot" for operators. It's not just about automation; it's about reducing the mental load for drivers - helping them spot thinning targets and maintain perfect track spacing, even in low light.
