ICEYE operates the world's largest synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation, with 62 satellites launched as of December 2025. SAR enables imaging through cloud cover and darkness, with one-metre accuracy used for natural-disaster monitoring, maritime, defence, and forest-related applications. The company was founded as a spin-off from Aalto University's radio technology department by Rafał Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila.

Europe's new growth fund picks a radar satellite company first
The European Commission built a fund to stop large European companies raising their late-stage money abroad, handed EQT the job of running it, and pointed it at 5 billion euros. Its first cheque goes into a round ICEYE closed back in June. The Finnish company flies radar satellites that see through cloud and smoke, which is what puts it in a forestry newsletter: fire monitoring, extended to Canada in July, and the deforestation service from #041.

ICEYE Launches SAR-Powered Deforestation Monitoring Across Its 62-Satellite Constellation
Finnish SAR operator ICEYE launched a deforestation monitoring service for governments and conservation NGOs, extending its 62-satellite constellation into tropical forest enforcement. SAR penetrates cloud and smoke, solving the blind spot where optical satellites fail in the Amazon and Congo Basin. The Jane Goodall Institute is an early partner, tracking chimpanzee habitats. In beta in select regions now, with a wider Q2 2026 rollout.
